ANDREW MORROW

In his professional art practice, Andrew Morrow has placed an emphasis on the painted medium, creating some of the most complex figurative paintings in contemporary art today. Drawing upon the tradition of history painting, Morrow’s large apocalyptic works negotiate the fragmentation of contemporary experience, masculinity, and sexuality. He brings faultless technique to the rendering of his images, and his signature manipulation of scale is apparent in his sometime epic works, the backgrounds replete with figures in miniature. Since parts of his paintings remain intentionally unfinished, Morrow keeps the chaotic atmosphere in suspension and the imaginations of his viewers captivated.

Morrow’s practice now expands into painting-driven, in-situ installation where painting and the conditions of its presentation become inseparable, as evidenced in his latest presentation entitled Something Went Wrong in the Bedroom at the Art Gallery of Mississauga in May 2010. He currently explores the aesthetics of spectacle and excess through a series of paintings and drawings, which continue to investigate contemporary fragmentation and the possibility of affect in painting. His work aspires to challenge the notion of art as a place of higher morality.

Morrow holds a Degree from the Ontario College of Art and Design, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Queen’s University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Ottawa, where he was awarded the Michel Goulet Prize for outstanding MFA Thesis Presentation. In addition to his studies and practice as an artist, he is active as a teacher, mentor, and public speaker.

Morrow has exhibited widely throughout Canada, including the Sudbury Art Gallery; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; the McMaster Museum of Art, the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John; and the Edmonton Art Gallery. His work is in many private and public collections, including the Royal Norwegian collection; Kingston City Hall; City of Ottawa Art Collection; and the St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco.

Morrow’s work has been reviewed in Canadian Art magazine, Canadian Art Online, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Eye Magazine, NOW Magazine, Vie Des Arts, the Ottawa Citizen, and on CBC Television and Radio, among others. He was recently included in the Magenta Foundation's publication, Carte Blanche Vol. 2: Painting, a survey of contemporary Canadian painting.

Morrow is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. He was short-listed for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2004, and the Toronto Arts Council Foundation Emerging Artist Award in 2007. He is represented by Patrick Mikhail Gallery in Ottawa and Edward Day Gallery in Toronto.
