JOSÉE DUBEAU

Josée Dubeau's installations explore our relationship to the world by deconstructing the morphology of public and domestic spaces. Sculptures made of pine wood draw the outlines of architectural elements and furniture to create open environments which generate structures and patterns derived from the ideology underlying the systematization of space and time. The investigation of modular arrangements combines the vocabulary of drawing and the aesthetic of minimalist sculpture: in the absence of surface and weight, the environments being mimicked appear in their delicate nomenclature: the resulting lightness leads to believe, from an existential point of view, in the concept of a detached and unattached world, like that of a scale model.

Josée Dubeau completed her MFA at the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1994. Residencies in Canada and abroad have been instrumental in developing Dubeau’s personal style and interests. Her International residencies include the IAAB / Christoph Merian Stiftung in Basel (1998), the Studio of Québec in Berlin at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien International Studio Programme (2004 - 2005) and the Studio of Québec in Tokyo (2009). Dubeau has taught sculpture and drawing at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (1998 - 2008), and at the University of Ottawa (2003 - 2010), where she is currently an Adjunct Professor. In the last decade, Dubeau has received numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Ministère des relations internationales du Québec, the Ministère de la culture et des communications du Québec, and the Ontario Arts Council. She has been commissioned for several public artworks throughout Canada. Her works are included in the collections of the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, the City of Ottawa, and in private collections throughout Canada, Switzerland, Germany and the UK. Axenéo7 has recently published a catalogue entitled Contour that is entirely devoted to her installation work from 2005-2010. Additionally, Esse magazine published an article on her Residency in London (2011), also entitled Contour.
