STEVE DRISCOLL

"Steve Driscoll is a modern alchemist. He transforms the base materials of urethane and pigment into ecstatic visions of the Canadian wilderness.

Like his historical forefathers, the Group of Seven, Driscoll heads to the forest for inspiration. But rather than re-enacting the plein air sketching method practiced by Canada’s archetypal landscape painters, Driscoll instead mentally banks the images he sees — lakes and trees, sunsets and sunrises, moons and stars, cabins and campfires — creating a storehouse of visual memories that he brings back to his Toronto studio. There he sets about finding ways to make his unorthodox materials suggest those aspects of the wilderness experience that loom large in his mind."

– Barbara Isherwood

Since graduating from OCADU in 2002, Toronto-based Steve Driscoll has emerged as one of Canada’s most exciting contemporary artists. Re-inventing landscape painting for the 21st century, Driscoll uses vibrant colour, monumental scale and industrial materials (pigmented urethane on plastic panels) to create ecstatic visions of wild places.

Driscoll’s groundbreaking 2016 exhibition, Just a Sliver of the Room, captured national attention through an innovative gallery installation featuring a 40-foot long shoreline scene reflected in a 2,000-gallon artificial lake, complete with boardwalk.

Steve Driscoll's work can be found in many public and private collections, including TD Bank, The Bank of Montreal, Mount Sinai Hospital and The Four Seasons. Driscoll has been the subject of four monographs, including 2012’s “Intelligence With The Earth”, with an essay by Gary Michael Dault.  Other exhibitions include a restaging of A Silver of the Room at Gallery Stratford, Size Matters, a collaborative project with photographer Finn O’Hara shown at the McMichael, and solo shows in Miami, Copenhagen, Vancouver, Edmonton and St. Johns. In 2019 he will have a solo exhibition at the Tom Thomson Gallery in Owen Sound.
