PATRICK MIKHAIL is pleased to present DIRE OUI (SAY YES), an exhibition of new works by Québec painter JENNIFER LEFORT. In Lefort's second solo exhibition at Patrick Mikhail, and her first at the gallery’s new Montréal exhibition space, Lefort presents a new body of work that explores painting and sculpture. This exhibition looks at the process of coming and going between the artists two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, and the development of an abstract language without being confined to a given method and approach.
Dire Oui (Say Yes) provides a primer for Patrick Mikhail’s presentation of a new Jennifer Lefort solo project at Volta 11 in Basel, Switzerland, during Art Basel week from June 18 to 23, 2015.
Jennifer Lefort works in painting, drawing, and sculpture. In her work, she navigates the ambiguous terrains of abstraction and blurs the lines between formalism and expressionism, colour field and pattern, structure and disorder, and between accidents and intuition. With a particular interest in how colour and gesture can substitute as a form of language in abstract work, Lefort aims to create unexpected yet poetic relationships between those elements in her paintings and sculptures.
DIRE OUI (SAY YES), reflects a fundamental value in Lefort’s approach to the work in the exhibition. The title of the show hints not only at the open-ended nature of the artists exploration into abstraction, but also into a willingness to embrace accidents, intuition, and, above all, experimentation in artistic practice. Combining traditional approaches like drawing, oil painting, and molded plaster with spray paint and Plexiglass shapes, Lefort’s goal is to explore new territory in her practice and develop new opportunities for ideas and work to manifest.
In the recent past, the professional practice of Quebec artist Jennifer Lefort has revolved around her interest in exploring abstract painting and developing a personalized language within it—gestures resemble logos, colors are language. Lefort’s approach to abstract work contains a sort of fiction, or rather, it reflects a kind of make-believe scenario. Ideas of aesthetics and formalism remain present throughout her abstract paintings. She is interested in the unresolved nature of the painted scenario—an ambiguous space where there is never a moment of complete knowing.
Lefort’s personal experience and daily intake of urban culture have been a starting point for her work. Her paintings become a combination of reality and fantasy information. She is fascinated with how the human condition reacts and finds its place within urban culture; more specifically how it finds room to escape, to belong, to contemplate, and to move. Urban centers have the capacity to change on multiple levels all at once: architecturally, demographically, financially, and emotively. There is something about this type of change that is intangible yet palpable, inexistent yet real, forward moving yet terribly uncertain. This appears
to Lefort to be deeply at the core of most experiences: fundamentally ephemeral, visceral, and fleeting in nature.
Jennifer Lefort completed an Honours BFA at Concordia University in Montréal in 2002. She received her MFA from York University in Toronto in 2006, and was awarded the Graduate Development Fund and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship Award in 2005. She is the recipient of the prestigious Joseph Plaskett Foundation Award, an advancement/travel grant she used to further her research in Berlin, Germany. She was also a finalist in the 2007 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Her paintings are found in numerous collections including the City of Ottawa Art Collection, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Foreign Affairs Canada, The Aldo Group, Giverny Capital, Hydro-Québec, and Abbott Laboratories. Lefort has exhibited her paintings at galleries in Ottawa, Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver, and has been featured in a variety of national and international publications and articles. Lefort’s work has been presented at numerous international art fairs including Volta New York, Volta Basel, Art Toronto, Toronto’s Feature Contemporary Art Fair, and Montréal’s Papier.

PATRICK MIKHAIL est heureux de présenter DIRE OUI (SAY YES), une exposition de nouvelles œuvres de l’artiste québécoise JENNIFER LEFORT. En son deuxième exposition solo de Lefort à Patrick Mikhail, et son premier au nouvel espace d'exposition de Montréal de la galerie, Lefort présente un nouveau projet de travail qui explore la peinture et la sculpture. Cette exposition se penche sur le processus du vas et viens entre les travaux de deux et trois dimensions de l’artiste, et le développement d'un langage abstrait sans se limiter à une méthode et approche donnée.
DIRE OUI (SAY YES) fournit une amorce pour la présentation de Patrick Mikhail d'un nouveau projet solo de Jennifer Lefort à Volta 11 à Bâle, en Suisse, qui aura lieu pendant la semaine d’Art Basel du 15 au 20 juin 2015.
Jennifer Lefort travaille en peinture, dessin et sculpture. Dans son travail, elle navigue les terrains ambiguës de l'abstraction et brouille les lignes entre le formalisme et l'expressionnisme, champ de couleur et le motif, la structure et le désordre, et entre les accidents et l'intuition. Avec un intérêt particulier dans la façon dont la couleur et le geste peuvent se substituer comme une forme de la langue dans le travail abstrait, Lefort vise à créer des relations inattendues encore poétiques entre ces éléments dans ses peintures et sculptures.
DIRE OUI (SAY YES), reflète une valeur fondamentale dans l'approche de Lefort de son travail dans l'exposition. Le titre de l'exposition astuce non seulement à la nature ouverte de l'exploration de l’artiste dans l'abstraction, mais aussi dans sa volonté d'inclure des accidents, l'intuition, et, surtout, l'expérimentation dans la pratique artistique. Combinant des approches traditionnelles comme le dessin, la peinture à l'huile, et le plâtre moulé avec de la peinture par pulvérisation et des formes en plexiglas, l'objectif de Lefort est d'explorer un nouveau territoire dans sa pratique et de développer de nouvelles opportunités pour que les idées et le travail se manifeste.
Dans un passé récent, la pratique professionnelle de Lefort a tourné autour de son intérêt à explorer la peinture abstraite et à développer un langage personnalisé, l'élaboration d'un langage personnalisé en son sein - gestes ressemblent à des logos, les couleurs sont des langues. L'approche de Lefort au travail abstrait contient une sorte de fiction, ou plutôt, il reflète une sorte de scénario imaginaire. Les idées d'esthétique et de formalisme restent présents tout au long de ses peintures abstraites. Elle s’intéresse à la nature non résolue du scénario peint - un espace ambigu où il n’y a jamais un moment de connaissance complète.
L'expérience personnelle de Lefort et apport quotidien de la culture urbaine ont été un point de départ pour son travail. Ses tableaux deviennent une combinaison de la réalité et de l'information fantaisie. Elle est fascinée par la façon dont la condition humaine réagit et trouve sa place dans la culture urbaine; plus précisément comment il trouve la place à s’échapper, d'appartenir, à contempler et à se déplacer. Les centres urbains ont la capacité de changer sur plusieurs niveaux à la fois: l'architecture, démographiquement, financièrement et émotivement. Il y a quelque chose à propos de ce type de changement qui est intangible bien que palpable, inexistant mais réelle, allant de l'avant et pourtant terriblement incertain. Cela semble à Lefort d'être profondément au cœur de la plupart des experiences: fondamentalement éphémères, viscérales et éphémère dans la nature.

Le travail de Lefort a été présenté à de nombreuses foires d'art internationales, y compris Volta New York, Volta Basel, Art Toronto, Feature Contemporary Art Fair à Toronto, et Papier à Montréal.
