PATRICK MIKHAIL GALLERY in Montréal is pleased to present DAYS IN NIGHT an exhibition of new works by Montréal-based artist THOMAS KNEUBÜHLER. This exhibition of new photographs, video, and audio takes place as part of an ambitious and unique trio of associated events and projects being launched across Montreal throughout November.

The project LAND CLAIM launches at Galerie B312 at the Belgo Building from November 11 to December 19. And the installation video for DAYS IN NIGHT, which accompanies the presentation at Patrick Mikhail, will be on view as part of programming for the RIDM Montreal International Documentary Festival at the festival’s Headquarters on Rue St.-Urbain. Together, the projects provide a unique insight into Kneubühler’s recent investigations into the themes that have characterized his professional practice to date.

DAYS IN NIGHT @ PATRICK MIKHAIL MONTRÉAL
It is hard to navigate in the dark, especially in an unknown territory. Over time, the eyes adjust to the darkness, and the new environment starts to emerge. Days in Night is about the experience of living in the dark and the limits of how much we can see. It is the result of an artist residency at CFS Alert, a military and research station in the high Arctic, located 800 km from the North Pole. From October to early March there is polar night, with no direct sunlight. During the residency, Kneubühler photographed the landscape when there was twilight or no light at all. He also interviewed people who live at the station to document how they experience the time without the sun, and to determine how their particular stories related to the polar night.

“We feel the strangeness of this darkness and are struck by the remoteness of that place which, however, is a military and research station. A station that hence signals that this place has been explored, mapped, and inhabited. And however empty, it seems there is no place unmarked by human presence.” (Corinna Ghaznavi)

The work of Thomas Kneubühler often deals with social issues and how technology affects people's lives. Whether it’s the ambiguous boundaries of public and private spaces, the all-pervasive spectre of security surveillance, or even the radiant, if dehumanizing, beauty of cityscapes, Kneubühler's professional practice “tellingly identifies the co-existing insecurities, uncertainties, and subtle pleasures embedded in the structures of modern life.”

Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Thomas Kneubühler lives and maintains a professional practice in Montréal. He completed a Master's degree in Studio Arts at Concordia University and has presented his works in numerous exhibitions in Europe and North America. Recent exhibitions include “Au milieu de nulle part” at the Centre Culturel Canadien in Paris as part of Mois de la Photo à Paris; “BABEL,” at Botanique at Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille; Manif d’art 7, The Québec City Biennial, 2014; “Fieldwork,” curated by Geneviève Chevalier, Oslo8, Basel; and “Streulicht” at Ausstellungsraum Klingental in Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, he was awarded the Pratt & Whitney Canada Prize of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and in June 2012 was a winner at the Swiss Arts Awards 2012 as part of Art Basel week. He currently appears in Group 6: The Canadian Forces Artists Program, 2012-2013 at The Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum in Carp, Ontario from November 8 to January 31, 2016.

His work can be found in the collections of Basler Kunstkredit; Canada Council Art Bank; Canton of Solothurn, Collection prêt d'oeuvres d'art; Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec; Concordia University; Conseil des Arts de Montréal; Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada; Kunstsammlung Basel-Landschaft; and RBC Royal Bank of Canada.
