PATRICK MIKHAIL GALLERY is pleased to announce that gallery artist ANDREW MORROW is launching a new site-specific installation at the ART GALLERY OF MISSISSAUGA from May 6 to June 20, 2010.
The work in Mr. Morrow's new exhibition entitled "Something Went Wrong in the Bedroom" at the AGM represents a shift from object-based painting as it merges painted imagery with digital animation and projection, resulting in what the artist describes as "painting-driven installation." This particular project combines the conventions of Italian ceiling painting, digital projection, pornography, Depeche Mode's 1980s ballad "Somebody," and gives a nod to Tracy Emin's "My Bed," creating a neo-Baroque, kaleidoscopic effect.
With this exhibition Mr. Morrow expands his practice through the introduction of new media technologies including computer animation, compositing, audio, installation, and digital projection and explores the possibilities of oil painting when combined with digital technology. The artist projects his paintings on a white re-creation of his bedroom, fragmenting and spinning, resulting in a kaleidoscopic effect reminiscent of a mobile or a child’s turning lamp.
Andrew Morrow’s professional practice has had an emphasis on the painted medium with his apocalyptic works negotiating the fragmentation of contemporary experience, masculinity, and sexuality. Mr. Morrow holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen’s University, as well as degrees from the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Toronto School of Art. He was a finalist in the 2004 RBC Canadian Painting Competition, and is the recipient of the University of Ottawa’s 2009 Michel Goulet Award for Excellence in a Master of Fine Arts Thesis. He was recently short-listed for the prestigious RBC Emerging Artist Award presented through the Council for the Arts in Ottawa. His work has been featured in the Globe and Mail, Canadian Art magazine, and Vie des Arts magazine.
