We are pleased to launch our Fall 2010 season with a new group exhibition entitled THE TRIUMPH OF THE THERAPEUTIC*.

In these turbulent times, 20 Canadian artists working in a variety of mediums investigate the ability of contemporary art to heal, inspire renewal, influence public opinion, create a mindset, capture the zeitgeist—or create a new one.

*Exhibition title Inspired by a 1965 work of the same name by American sociologist Philip Rieff (1922 –2006).

IN OTHER GALLERY NEWS…

We welcome two new artists to the gallery:

Inspired by her intimate relationship with the outdoors, the photographic practice of JESSICA AUER is largely concerned with the exploration of cultural and natural sites of recreation. By exploring both sparsely inhabited spaces as well as sites that have been recently built or severely transformed, the artist makes photographs that provoke reflection on personal experience, cultural authenticity, and collective memory of specific sites. Jessica Auer lives and works in Montréal where she obtained an MFA from Concordia University. Solo exhibitions include Re-creational Spaces at Galerie Thérèse Dion (Montréal, 2007) and Toronto Image Works (Toronto, 2008). Auer is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. Her work is held in various private and public collections such as the Canada Council Art Bank, Fidelity Investments, CollectArt, Standard Life, and the Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec. She currently teaches photography at Concordia University.

LINDA CHALMERS is a Toronto-based emerging artist who, through painting, explores themes of colour and digitization. By hybridizing the gestural and the digital, Chalmers creates saturated settings of multiple layers that weave in and out of each other, simultaneously expanding and merging fields of space and colour. Chalmers uses a mix of styles and shapes from the history of abstract art and then remixes these moves, strokes, and shapes into freshly moving images. Futurism meets Abstract Expressionism, with a hint of street. In 2009, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto. She was the first recipient of the Catherine Daigle Award in 2008, a distinction that recognizes excellence in the arts by a woman artist.
